late night peace rant
another year, another christmas over.
as long and drawn out as christmas feels it comes and goes so quickly every year. i always get a little sad around 11:55 p.m. on christmas. once it turns midnight it's all over.
but then again, it comes every year so there's not too much to be sad about.
i went and saw the movie Charlie Wilson's War and it got me thinking. In todays war do they fight on christmas? I asked my parents and they said they didn't know about nowadays but during the world wars they would stop fighting for the day and sometimes even cross enemy lines to wish each other a merry christmas. Imagine wishing someone a merry christmas that come boxing day you were pointing your gun at?
I know war and international politics are far beyond my grasp...but there has to be a solution out there. I wonder if there will ever be peace between enemy countries, if civilians will ever stop being killed for things far beyond their control, or especially if war will one day be a thing of the past; barbaric even. Will any sort of war be viewed, one day, as something that only exists in the past?
It's easy to use a holiday like christmas as a sort of "make-up" day for all the sins from the previous year, as a day where we all exclaim "peace on earth!". If everyone who celebrated christmas made a conscious effort to spread peace and love, could war and hatred be overcome?
Sometimes I get so overwhelmed with all the sad things happening in the world; an old man sitting alone in a restaurant, a child in Africa suffering from aids, people killing people because of a few men in suits who can't get along. There is sadness all around the world, more extreme in some areas, yes, but it's still everywhere.
So this christmas I'm thankful for the fact that I can sit and type my thoughts on the the sad state of the world in the safety of my own home, warm and nourished. It's one thing to think about it, which I already find a lot to handle, but to experience it is very different.
I am very lucky to say that I have heard about more sadness than I have ever experienced, but I know this isn't the case for many people in the world. So this Christmas, be happy that you are healthy, living in a peaceful country, and surrounded by friends and family. Be happy that we have the right to an education. Here's to hoping that we (myself included) will take that education and learn about what is going on in the world so that we can one day fix it and move towards a better future.
merry christmas!

more adventurous
what's christmas without a little conflict?
Christmas eve started off with a bang.
Surprisingly enough, the actual shopping I had to do wasn't too stressful.
At Indigo, there was a line spanning around the entire store but by the time I was ready it had shrunk to a completely reasonable length. While browsing I came upon Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul and thought it was extremely excessive.
Speaking of excessive, I braved the new power centre built where my beloved quarry used to be. I walked around Zellers for a few minutes and after buying a copy of Hairspray for my mom realized there was nothing else I could possibly pass off as a respectable gift from the place.
I noticed two mini windmills in the parking lot and thought this was funny since I'd only seen bigger windmills in large fields, never in Waterdown. Apparently, this Zellers is the first to use solar powering and is being remarked as the "greenest" Zellers to date.
While it is a respectable effort, it's also hard to trust that a multi billion dollar company is concerned with their effect on the environment. Two windmills doesn't seem like enough to make up for all the space and electricity used up by the store.
I want nature back!

i thought i saw a pussycat

This is Cole.
Cole likes to meow. a lot. Cole meows when you pet her, she meows when she wants to go outside and she meows when she wants you to pay attention to her.
She likes to play inside boxes, go for long adventures outside and sleep on closet shelves.
Cole used to sleep above my head when she was little because my hair felt like her mom's fur.

This is Skat.
Skat likes to lye in front of the fire for hours and hours. He can't meow. When I was a kid I said it was just because he doesn't have a voicebox...but I don't know if that;s the actual reason. He only meows when he's really sad or scared, and it's more of a cry than a meow. Most of the time, he has his scratchy little meow that when heard, each time, makes you think all over again how cute it is.
He likes to go outside, especially in the summer when he can sit in the sun for hours and eat as much grass as he wants.
Skat is like me.
eavesdropping at the antique mall
Today I caught myself being a lurk...and for once not just an online lurk. With the stealthiest of moves, I admit I actually eavesdropped on two elderly women at the Freelton Antique Market. I became intrigued when I heard them discussing the newest additions to their nativity scenes in their home. I never knew it was the sort of thing you could add to.
some memorable items from the antique mall:

a book of buttons? amazing!

some art nouveau looking tins

little snoopy piano

some beer cans that make me wish I drank beer.

hilarious fax salt and pepper shakers.

and...Brooke Shields Barbie!?
The sad part of the day was when I went to purchase my 1970's Barbie Doll Case and because the price tag had fallen off they wouldn't sell it to me! Bitches and hoes.
Mattel's 1970's World Of Barbie collection is so cute and I immediatly went on a google research trek to find some good images. I found a doll case like the one I was going to buy:

and...a cute little Barbie commercial from the 70's.
LikeTelevision Embed Movies and TV Shows
so in the end, it was an unsuccesful trip, as my main goal was finishing up my christmas shopping. So this means I'll be forced to brave a mall on christmas eve...
